Space Sharks: Competitors Announced

Today, the Center for Space Commerce and Finance announced the finalists that will be competing in the upcoming NewSpace Business Plan Competition on Saturday, May 26 during the International Space Development Conference (ISDC) in Los Angeles. Six finalists were selected to compete in the Shark Tank-style pitch competition:

  • Beyond Earth – Beyond Earth is a new entrant in the remote sensing arena focused on global water utilization.

  • First Resonance – Modern software solutions for aerospace manufacturing.

  • Space Map – A map and positioning system of the past, present, and future locations of all known bodies in the solar system.

  • Stofiel Aerospace – A small satellite launch system offering scalable, mobile, and on-demand launches of individual payloads between 15 and 250kg, for $20k per kg.

  • Voyager Space Technologies – Artificially intelligent software to dramatically lower the time and cost it takes to design new satellites.

  • Waypoint 2 Space – Space experiences and space training services, for the general public, commercial spaceflight participants (space tourists), and the research community.

Interested entrepreneurs, investors, and industry professionals are encouraged to attend, and participate, by voting for their favorite space startup idea. Competitors will present their investment pitch, and will then be grilled by the judges during a fast-paced Q&A session. The winning team will receive a cash prize sponsored by the Heinlein Prize Trust, as well as continued assistance and mentorship from the Center for Space Commerce and Finance.

The event is being held in conjunction with the 2018 ISDC. Those interested in attending can purchase a day pass for Saturday’s events, or participate in the full, four day conference covering topics such as space travel, space development, and space settlement. More information about conference and registration options can be found online: http://isdc2018.nss.org.

The NewSpace Business Plan Competition is part of the Space Business track of programming at ISDC that also includes a Space Investment Summit session on Saturday afternoon. In this session, people with their fingers on the pulse of the NewSpace investment ecosystem will discuss opportunities for investors at all levels, and how a new wave of space-focused private equity and venture capital funds is set to increase in the pace of space development. On Sunday, the Space Business track will feature a session on Space Commerce and Entrepreneurship and a session titled Farmer in the Sky that examines how the recent entrepreneurial renaissance in closed-system farming can be applied to long term space habitation.

Entrepreneurs interested in competing in future events are encouraged to sign up to receive updates from the Center for Space Commerce and Finance by visiting their website: https://www.cscf.space.  The next competition will be held in November 2018 in conjunction with the New Worlds Conference in Austin Texas.
